Boston Dynamics Tests Spot Robot Dogs for Last-Mile Delivery Operations

ByAyshathul Mushrifa

Boston Dynamics is testing a new last-mile delivery application for its Spot quadruped robot, exploring how robotic mobility can help delivery drivers transport packages from vehicles directly to customer doorsteps.

The U.S.-based robotics leader is expanding Spot beyond industrial inspection missions into public environments where robots must navigate unpredictable terrain, including stairs, sidewalks, lawns, and residential obstacles. The initiative targets one of the most challenging areas of logistics automation: the final 50 feet of delivery.

Marco da Silva, Vice President and General Manager for Spot at Boston Dynamics, stated:

"So much of logistics is already automated, but we believe that the final frontier of logistics automation is that last 50 feet. We've done things to automate inside of the hub, inside of sort facilities, but now we're trying to bridge the gap to the final mile."

Spot leverages its four-legged design to traverse uneven surfaces and complex residential environments that have historically limited wheeled or aerial delivery robots. The platform uses a conveyor payload system for controlled package transport and features integrated sensors enabling autonomous navigation across changing outdoor conditions.

Paige Miller, Senior Staff Product Manager for Spot at Boston Dynamics, stated:

"Spot's legs and ability to handle unstructured terrain and environments give it advantages over other robots. The challenges that make last-mile delivery difficult for other systems create an ideal opportunity for an all-terrain, legged robot."

Boston Dynamics plans to work with logistics partners to validate Spot delivery operations in real-world environments. Future developments may include autonomous vehicle integration, improved route planning, robotic package handling systems, and expanded software capabilities through the company's Orbit orchestration platform. The company aims to progress from demonstrations toward commercial pilots where Spot works alongside delivery drivers to increase efficiency, reduce physical strain, and support higher package volumes.
