PT PAL

December 19, 2025 (Indonesia) – Indonesian state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL Indonesia has successfully launched the nation’s first Red White-class frigate, marking a major milestone in the country’s naval modernization and defense-industrial capabilities. The lead vessel, KRI Balaputradewa-322, was ceremonially launched at PT PAL’s Surabaya shipyard on 18 December 2025, underscoring Indonesia’s growing ambition to produce advanced surface combatants domestically.

Based on the Arrowhead 140 design, licensed from UK defense group Babcock International and derived from the Royal Danish Navy’s Iver Huitfeldt class, the Red White frigate represents one of the largest and most capable warships ever built in Indonesia. The frigate’s construction proceeded from initial steel-cutting in late 2022 to keel laying in August 2023, with the launch ceremony following steady progress at PT PAL’s facilities.

“The launch of KRI Balaputradewa demonstrates Indonesia’s growing self-reliance in naval shipbuilding and strengthens the Indonesian Navy’s capacity to protect the nation’s sovereign waters,” said a defense official during the event.

Key Highlights of the Red White Frigate Launch

  • First Red White-class frigate launched — KRI Balaputradewa-322 now entering outfitting and trials
  • Arrowhead 140 design licensed from Babcock and adapted for Indonesian requirements
  • Vessel represents one of the largest combatants ever built in Indonesia, with advanced multi-role capabilities
  • Part of a two-ship program to bolster the Indonesian Navy’s surface fleet
  • Ship will undergo systems integration, harbour trials, and sea trials before commissioning

The Red White frigate is designed for a range of missions including air defense, surface warfare, and maritime security. With a length of approximately 140 meters, displacement of around 6,626 tonnes, and modern propulsion and combat systems, the class is expected to provide the Indonesian Navy with enhanced operational reach and deterrence.

Industry analysts view the launch as a significant step for Indonesia’s defense sector, which has been investing in localized shipbuilding to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and strengthen technological sovereignty. The frigate’s outfitting and trials over the coming years will determine its readiness for active service, with commissioning anticipated later in the decade.
