# Defense & Security 2025: China on Track with Thai Submarine Delivery
November 10, 2025 (Bangkok, Thailand) – China is reportedly on schedule to deliver the Royal Thai Navy's (RTN) S26T diesel-electric submarine, a project that has faced delays over engine selection but is now moving forward. The delivery is expected by the end of 2028, following a revised agreement between Thailand and the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
According to CSSC officials, the new CHD620 marine diesel engine, approved by Thailand, is being fitted to the submarine, replacing Germany's MTU 396 engine, which could not be exported to China due to restrictions. Discussions are also ongoing regarding potential additional S26T submarines, though Thailand is expected to assess the performance of the first boat before committing to further orders.
“The revised contract ensures timely delivery while adapting to engine supply challenges,” said a CSSC representative. “Thailand’s S26T program is gathering pace and reflects the growing defense cooperation between the two nations.”
The submarine program, initially contracted in 2017, highlights China’s increasing role in Southeast Asian naval modernization and underscores the strategic importance of regional defense partnerships.
