ABB Robotics Launches Automated Surface Finishing Cell for Simplified Industrial Automation

ABB Robotics has launched the OmniVance Collaborative Surface Finishing Cell, its first fully automated sanding and polishing cell designed to help manufacturers automate surface finishing tasks with minimal robotics expertise.

The plug-and-play system targets small and medium-sized enterprises seeking affordable automation for sanding and polishing operations. ABB said the solution improves throughput, reduces processing time, and lowers costs compared to traditional manual finishing methods.

“A growing number of companies are looking to automate processes such as sanding and polishing, but many smaller businesses lack in-house robotics expertise,” said Craig McDonnell. “With our new OmniVance Collaborative Surface Finishing Cell, we’re introducing industrial-grade robotics in a simple, affordable, and scalable solution.”

The cell uses ABB’s GoFa collaborative robot to perform precision sanding and polishing tasks. Delivered as a fully self-contained and CE-certified system, the solution includes safety components and requires no additional engineering to begin production.

ABB said the finishing cell is highly adaptable for high-mix manufacturing environments. Businesses can easily add new tools and accessories, while integrated dust extraction readiness supports cleaner workspaces and improved product quality.

The company highlighted growing labor shortages in manufacturing as a major driver for automation adoption. According to Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute, nearly 1.9 million manufacturing jobs could remain unfilled by 2033.

ABB’s intuitive software simplifies operation through a tablet-style interface that requires no custom programming knowledge. Features including 3D path recording and preset path creation can reduce programming time by up to 90%, helping businesses achieve faster returns on investment.

The OmniVance Collaborative Surface Finishing Cell reflects ABB’s broader strategy of making industrial-grade robotic automation more accessible for companies entering robotics for the first time.
