Yaskawa Launches Cleanroom-Compatible Robots for Pharmaceutical Material Handling

ByAyshathul Mushrifa

YASKAWA Electric Corporation has introduced two hygienic industrial robots designed to automate material handling tasks in pharmaceutical, biotechnology and life sciences environments. The new systems are built to support the safe transfer of chemicals, laboratory samples and small containers while meeting strict contamination-control requirements in regulated production areas.

As pharmaceutical manufacturers continue to expand automation in cleanrooms and sterile processing spaces, demand is rising for robots that can operate reliably under hygiene-sensitive conditions. Yaskawa's latest models are intended to reduce manual intervention, improve operator safety and support more consistent handling processes in environments where cleanliness and compliance are critical.

The robots are certified to internationally recognized ISO 14644-1 cleanroom standards. The 8 kg payload model complies with ISO Cleanroom Class 4, while the 7 kg payload version meets ISO Cleanroom Class 5 requirements. Both robots feature smooth external surfaces and rounded contours designed to minimize particle traps and simplify cleaning.

To support washdown and sanitation procedures, all robot axes are protected to the equivalent of IP69, enabling resistance to high-pressure cleaning. The systems also use a specialized surface coating designed to withstand common pharmaceutical disinfectants, including hydrogen peroxide-based agents. In addition, FDA-approved food-grade grease and EHEDG-aligned sealing technologies further reinforce suitability for contamination-sensitive applications.

The 7 kg robot offers a maximum reach of 927 mm, while the 8 kg version provides a reach of 727 mm. These specifications make the robots suitable for laboratory automation, sample handling, sterile material transfer and pharmaceutical packaging support where limiting human contact is important.

Commercial availability began on June 1, 2026, and the robots were scheduled for public exhibition at FOOMA JAPAN 2026 in Tokyo. The launch strengthens Yaskawa's position in hygienic automation and reflects the continued growth of robotics in pharmaceutical manufacturing and laboratory operations.
