XPeng Activates Humanoid Robot Production Line, Targets Mass Output This Year

ByAyshathul Mushrifa

XPeng has officially activated a dedicated production line for its IRON humanoid robot in Guangzhou, completing its first unit as it transitions from R&D prototyping directly into production line manufacturing.

The finished robot walked off the assembly line autonomously. Automation exceeds 80% across core line processes, leveraging automotive-grade quality control systems from the company's electric vehicle manufacturing operations to enhance precision and consistency.

He Xiaopeng, Founder of XPeng, stated:

"This means we have moved beyond building research and development prototypes into manufacturing on a production line. We have built a production line from scratch for an entirely new product category with no precedent, and we will continue to expand production speed and scale."

IRON features 76 degrees of freedom across its body, including 21 in each hand, and runs on three proprietary Turing AI chips delivering computing performance up to 2,250 TOPS. An onboard physical AI foundation model allows the machine to carry out complex tasks autonomously.

When IRON was first unveiled last year, its natural humanlike gait prompted speculation that a person was disguised inside. XPeng dispelled this by cutting open part of the robot's outer trouser leg at the event to reveal its internal mechanical structure.

XPeng plans to begin mass production of IRON late this year, deploying units initially across its own retail stores and business sites before launching formal sales in domestic and global markets next year.

The company expects profit margins on general-purpose humanoids to exceed those of new energy vehicles. XPeng's robotics arm recently raised over $900 million from IDG Capital, GL Ventures, Tencent, and Alibaba, valuing the business at $6.3 billion as it builds out automobiles, robotics, and international expansion as three growth curves.
