JD.com to Deploy 3 Million Robots in Major 5-Year Logistics Automation Push

JD.com is accelerating its push into robotics with a sweeping plan to fully automate its nationwide logistics network, introducing its industrial Wolf Robot series at an event in Beijing.

Over the next five years, JD Logistics aims to procure 3 million robots, 1 million unstaffed vehicles, and 100,000 delivery drones to establish an automated supply chain, according to Cao Peng, chairman of the technology committee.

Designed to handle repetitive tasks in harsh conditions, the system picks, sorts, transports, and delivers goods with minimal human intervention, noted Liu Lige, head of embodied intelligence robots at JD Logistics.

The hardware lineup includes specialized robotic units operating in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius, automated pharmacy dispatchers, and autonomous aerial delivery drones across standard distribution facilities.

Addressing displacement concerns across its 700,000-person workforce, founder Liu Qiangdong detailed the Nirvana Plan to systematically retrain couriers and warehouse staff for technical roles like robot servicing and maintenance.

Beyond hardware deployment, JD plans to leverage its physical footprint to collect over 10 million hours of real-world operational interaction data to advance general-purpose embodied AI development.

To power this ecosystem, JD signed an agreement with Chinese chip designer Moore Threads to construct a massive computing cluster powered by 100,000 domestic chips alongside 80 dedicated RoboBase research hubs.
