Boston Dynamics Taps Korean Suppliers for Atlas Humanoid Robot Production

Boston Dynamics is expanding its supply chain in South Korea as it prepares for the commercial rollout of its Atlas humanoid robot. A team of engineers has been evaluating more than ten Korean automotive component manufacturers, many affiliated with Hyundai Motor Group, to identify partners capable of supporting large-scale production.

The initiative focuses on assessing suppliers’ manufacturing capacity, engineering capabilities, and readiness for high-volume production. Hyundai aims to scale Atlas manufacturing to approximately 30,000 units annually by 2028, leveraging its established automotive ecosystem to accelerate commercialization.

A Boston Dynamics spokesperson stated:

"Establishing a strong manufacturing network is critical as we move toward commercial deployment of Atlas. Collaborating with experienced automotive suppliers allows us to scale efficiently while maintaining performance and reliability standards."

Key suppliers under evaluation include Hyundai Mobis, which develops actuators and robotic grippers, Hwashin Precision for lightweight aluminum structures, and SOS Lab for LiDAR-based sensing systems. These components are essential for Atlas’ mobility, perception, and manipulation capabilities.

Industry estimates suggest that 60 to 70 percent of humanoid robot components overlap with automotive parts, including motors, sensors, and structural elements. This overlap enables Boston Dynamics to integrate into Hyundai’s mature supply chain rather than building one from scratch.

The company’s strategy combines U.S.-based AI and software development with Korean hardware manufacturing. This approach aligns with broader efforts to strengthen supply chains outside China while advancing scalable humanoid robotics production for industrial and commercial applications.
