Atlas Humanoid Robot Delivers Match Ball During FIFA World Cup 2026

East Rutherford, New Jersey – 5 July 2026 – Boston Dynamics' Atlas humanoid robot made history during the FIFA World Cup 2026 by delivering the match ball at halftime of the Round of 16 match between Brazil and Norway. Presented by tournament sponsor Hyundai Motor, the robot also entertained fans by performing football-inspired goal celebrations, including Norwegian striker Erling Haaland's signature meditation pose.

The live stadium appearance demonstrated Atlas' ability to operate in a complex real-world environment. Engineers adapted the robot to navigate natural grass and established a dedicated radio communication system after conventional Wi-Fi was deemed unreliable due to the large number of mobile devices inside the stadium.

Alberto Rodriguez, Director of Robot Behavior at Boston Dynamics, said:

“We always looked at human skill as a way to motivate us and challenge us to push forward what robots can do.”

Rodriguez explained that Atlas required additional training to walk, jump, and run safely on grass, making it more robust for outdoor environments. The robot's performance built on previous demonstrations that included dancing and parkour while showcasing its growing capability in dynamic public settings.

Hyundai plans to expand Atlas' role beyond demonstrations, announcing earlier this year that it intends to deploy the humanoid robots at its U.S. manufacturing facility in Georgia beginning in 2028. The robots are expected to automate repetitive and high-risk industrial tasks as part of the company's broader robotics strategy.
