Amazon and AutoStore Ink Global Supply Deal to Boost Fulfillment Automation

ByAyshathul Mushrifa

Amazon has entered into a global framework agreement with AutoStore, a fulfillment technology provider, to define terms for future procurement of the company's automated storage and retrieval systems across its logistics network.

The deal, announced last week, establishes a commercial structure that enables Amazon to scale its adoption of AutoStore's high-density grid-based storage technology, which is widely used by e-commerce and third-party logistics operators to achieve high-throughput order fulfillment.

This agreement does not include any purchase commitments, according to the AutoStore press release, leaving the actual volume and pace of deployments dependent on Amazon's operational decisions.

The partnership adds an external automation layer to Amazon's fulfillment network, complementing the company's significant internal robotics development efforts. Amazon has invested heavily in proprietary robotic arms, mobile drive units and software platforms to streamline package sortation and handling across its facilities.

Mats Hovland Vikse, CEO of AutoStore, stated:

"We see more and more customers actually taking good ownership of their automation, figuring out how to best utilize it simply because it's becoming so strategically important. And that's a trend that we see across a wide variety of customers out there."

Industry analysts view the deal as a strategic move to accelerate automation adoption without committing to specific capital expenditures upfront. Supply chain consultant Brittain Ladd noted on LinkedIn that AutoStore will need to scale its production capacity to meet Amazon's volume requirements, while also cautioning that competitors like Target, Walmart and Kroger should consider similar deployments.

Neither Amazon nor AutoStore responded to requests for additional comment on the arrangement. The agreement follows a broader trend of major retailers embedding dense storage automation into both fulfillment centers and select store locations to improve inventory density and order picking speed.
